PURE CONSCIOUSNESS

When I came to understand more clearly the difference between my ego (or false self) and my “true self,” and then looked at various ways I might reach that “true self,” especially by becoming a “nobody,” I was stumped as to what this would actually mean in terms of human experience.

I thought I’d do some research on work done in academia on the “self” and discovered Galen Strawson, a philosopher famous for studying the nature of consciousness or the “self.”

Strawson writes that pure uninterrupted consciousness lasts only about one-third of a second to three seconds – which has recently been modified by Fei Fei Li to an interval as brief as a blink. That’s not to say that this period of consciousness can’t be renewed and extended by follow-up thoughts. Strawson thought, though, that turning a succession of thoughts into a narrative story is not necessary to be truly human. I agree with Strawson that it’s in a pure consciousness experience where we actually exist as our “true self.” That this experience, not one influenced by established “roles” or self-edited “movies” or “stories,” is where the “true self” actually exists. And, if this “true self” can be directed through our best understanding of an “alive” God, then we’ll be able to “see” and “act” through God’s eyes and mind after developing the “tools” which help us see and think like God would see and think if God were a human being – as if God were actually one’s self. Such principal tools of God include love, truth, justice, and beauty.

Of course, it’s important to gain the freedom to become one’s “true self,” by using our own intrinsic freedom – the freedom God originally gave us at birth – but which we, unfortunately, and all too often, relinquish during the periods when we’re busy developing our egos into false selves.

Remember, once you achieve becoming “nobody,” it’s only then that you’re able to become your “true self” – anytime you want. Just imagine the power of that – to be able to see through God’s eyes, experience life through God’s mind and soul, and, then, be able to act as God would act if God were a human being – that is, as if God were you.

CLOUD IN FRONT OF THE SUN

Who is God, anyway?
Is God a spiritual entity encouraging us to be our best
Intellectually, morally, and spiritually?
Is God someone pointing us in the right direction?

My main problem with God involves the influence of certain people
Who also are pointing us in one direction or the other –
People from whom we think we need permission,
Or who provide us with identity,
Or even the permission to be?

When these people merge with God, we get “Religion” –
Like a cloud in front of the sun –
Especially when we’re not able to distinguish one from the other.

All human beings are born with the capacity to experience joy –
And so, from birth, potentially we can embody it –
But then, almost immediately, we find we aren’t seeing beyond our family
(Unless our family’s exceptionally transparent to God) –
So, when we perceive family instead of God –
That is, when we experience a world largely of related people instead of a world of God –
This becomes one of the main sources of our anxiety.

We know God is there – right behind them– just over their shoulders –
As spiritual “light” –
And when we fall in love with that light –
It frequently occurs to us to “hit the road.”
If we do that, we’ll have to leave family, society, and world –
And risk dying for God.

But, if we follow through on this, eventually we’ll get everything back –
God and the world –
Even family.

If we become a “God” person
We’ll be able to “see” God in others –
In all others.

Then, when we’re able to distinguish what’s not God from God –
That won’t upset us –
Because it’s reality
And God is reality.

When we start seeing reality through God’s eyes –
Feeling with God’s heart –
We’ll fall deeper and deeper in love with Love
So that everything turns out alright –

You might even say, we’ll have been “Saved!”

PEERING OUT OF TUNNELS

Why worry about what one “looks like”
When peering through cloudbursts of love?

How give up one’s “self” in order to look through God’s eyes –
Or take a “perfect shot” without aiming –
In other words, how act in this world?

How will we achieve the spontaneity of no ego – like children do –
Or be impervious as a flower taking its own beauty for granted?

And why spend life peering out of tunnels
To see whether you’re loved or threatened?

What God is, is fearless – like water –
A being who’s no “thing” – but radiates love –
Without, however, being interested in the images created inside our heads –
As opposed to what we’re actually doing.

God appears wherever nothing else can be seen –
Beyond the self – even any “God” self –
That is, a selfless “self” who sees – but can’t be seen –
Because God never appears outside “spirit,”
That is, “love,” truth,” “justice,” or “beauty,”
And why the “you,” yearning to model yourself on God,
Are unafraid of dying –
Because there, you’re actually not there –
Even though, up to now, you’ve been busily completing a spiritual self
Inside time!

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO “SEE” GOD?

Perhaps, as a reflection of reflections?

Instead of that, though, why don’t we move directly towards God
In every aspect of the “spirit” that presents itself:

For example, Love
We pretty much know what love is and how it reflects God –
So I think we need to pay more attention to the love opportunities in our lives
And, whenever we recognize love, we need to go all in.

(Love is a decorative button attached to God’s clothes)

What about Truth – we’re quite familiar with what truth is
And how it’s close to being the essence of God –
When we state the truth – especially against our self-interest –
We’ll just need to keep going – until our spirit starts becoming lighter.

(Truth dares kiss God’s lips)

What about Justice – we know how serious God can be about this
Since one can’t hide injustice from God –
In such a case, God will wake us up, place a mirror in front of us,
And compel us look directly at ourselves.

(Justice is the worn leather in God’s shoes)

Finally, what about Beauty – the lively and joyful glints in God’s eyes –
You can “see” God in all the surprises inherent in beauty –
For example, in Nature’s infinite flutter, or a loved one’s irresistible laughter.

(Beauty is the face of God glimpsed just before God turns a corner)

God is “light” – a shimmering
God is the expectant feeling in our hearts when we know something “good” is coming –
God is the expectation that life can be good –
God is identical with that “goodness.”

God is God – and that’s certainly no joke!
