BLAZING BEAUTY

How is it possible to grow more beautiful while aging,
Especially given all the recent dimming
Of eyes, ears, teeth, feet – even balance?

Is it only our memories that are getting somewhat sweeter,
Especially the recent ones?

Those recent memories – the brand-new ones –
Having just been born –
Are certainly the easiest to grasp.

Primarily, it’s increasing gentleness that I have recently begun to accept –
Especially a gratitude for small gifts –
The unexpected ones, that aging’s been providing me with.

I think a certain kind of beauty does arrive with age – but mostly from the outside –
A beauty we might never have noticed before
That we can carefully turn and store inside ourselves.

It goes without saying that this kind of beauty constituted the original name of God.

So, as we get older, it’s our ability to accept God,
Along with God’s primary attributes – love, truth, justice, beauty and freedom –
That’s the source of any and all blazing beauty in our lives.

THE SINGLE SOLE MESSAGE

The world is only as “real” as our senses will allow us to experience –
Since with limited senses we can only interact inside a limited world.

Also, the world is only as real as the ideas we take mental “rides” on –
Rides created inside our heads – and run just for fun.

If nothing we experience or think is actually fully “real,” however –
Then that experience or thought must be our subjective reality –
While positing an infinite “beyond” which no human being will ever reach.

So, what if “gratitude” is all we’ll ever be allowed to authentically experience –
With gratitude being our “Heaven?”

What if the single sole authentic message we’ll ever be given
Is “Thank you God?”

“Thank you.”

LOST INNOCENCE

It would be some miracle if we could ever find it again –
Lost somewhere during the course of early childhood.

If, for a moment, however, we put down our more serious pursuits
And start looking –
With patience, we’ll find it’s still there.

And, if we start re-cultivating that spring-green patch of early innocence,
One day, out of it, might grow a gentle mature human being
Who – because of gratitude –
Could well be on the way to becoming “whole” – that is to say, “holy.”

Later, when God looks down
At all the human beings in the world exhibiting gratefulness –
Because of that gratitude, from God’s point of view, they’ll light up
And can be seen.
