ONLY IF YOUR HEART SAYS SO

Is God “immanent” – within us?

Yes, if you allow it.

But is God imminent only for human beings?

Humans do have the best minds – but is that all that matters?
What about crickets, blue birds,
Stars bursting with ultraviolet light?

Really isn’t everything infused in some way with God?
Isn’t everything – being and nonbeing alike –
Holy?

By ignoring the omnipresence of the holy
We’re about to brush our blue-green earth
Off the table –
Mindlessly wasting its beauty.

Dear people, you need to think about changing your minds –
And start opening up to and valuing what’s really sacred!
Everything you see, feel, taste, touch, think,
And remember is Holy.

God is everywhere

But only if your heart says so!

HOLY CORRESPONDENCE

Some poets enjoy exploring beauty in nature –
While others prefer “punching out” big ideas.

Some poets muse about where we came from –
While others look ahead to where we might be going.

Some poets get depressed and lie down in their cups –
While others become, and sometimes remain, righteously angry.

But the greatest poets – the truly great ones –
Look right into the face of divine nothingness
And express the inexpressible.

The truly great ones fall so deeply in love with the Holy
That they write shy “spiritual letters” to eternity
Which sometimes provoke surprising responses from God
And anyone fortunate enough to stumble upon this holy correspondence.

LET’S GET THIS STRAIGHT

Let’s get this straight:
God is not some kind of “super-human” who runs the universe –
God’s essential nature is one of “spirit” – such as “love” or “truth.”
Whoever experiences this, experiences “God”

So, the paramount goal is not to get into some place called “Heaven”
The goal – for each of us – spiritually –
Is to become love – become truth.

If this ends up as our reality – at least from time to time –
Then, when meeting other people, you’ll still be largely ignored,
But, subconsciously, they might intuit they’ve encountered something “Holy”
And that would be true –
And that would be you

So long as you remember
Never to take credit for it.

NO EXCUSE

We can encounter God as “revealed”
Anytime we’re out in nature
(To mystics known as God’s “Back”).

To see God’s hidden “Face,” however, takes a pure heart, courage,
And an intense love.

Looking at God both ways allows us to experience God whole – that is, as “Holy” –

And there’s really no excuse for our not doing that.

FLYING STRAIGHT TO GOD

Look for a subtle movement
Or a place of pure stillness –

God may be found in either place.

Your heart, on the other hand, is a boiler room
Banging out wants and fears –

Once in a lifetime, though, you may hear God’s distant call,
And, suddenly, your heart’ll leap out of your chest
And fly like a bird quickly disappearing into the deep blue sky –

Free at last!

This is the actual moment you become holy –
And fill with overflowing joy –

When your heart leaves your heart –
And starts flying straight to God.

JUST WHAT IS SACRED?

“Everything!” say the Zen people
But have no idea, really, how that might work.

“Nothing” says 21st Century Man
And doesn’t give it another thought.

Actually, it’s naming a specific object or task
As being “holy” –
As if, by naming it, one can make it so.

There are those who try to eat the sacred
Believing, by swallowing it, you can bring God inside you –
Many religions practice a form of this belief.

The word “sacred” has also been used by various religions
And their faithful
As an “Open Sesame” to their proprietary collective –
A password that can get you past the front door.

Usually, when one claims something is “sacred,” they mean it’s “related to God” –
Something God has “touched” in the past and might want to touch again.

Are there people that, in and of themselves, are sacred?
Or is it only when such a person touches an object that makes it so –
For example, a spiritual symbol that can be worn on a gold chain
Ensuring that, if one suddenly dies, they’ll have a better chance of ending up with God?

Maybe sacred objects are simply reminders passed by along the road of life
Muttering: “There’s something important you’ve been missing.”

Back here, though, in the land of sunshine,
One final bit of unconscious joy is allocated just before we pass
To brighten up our final step
Into glory or, alternatively, to the place that’s quickly going dark.

Hopefully, long before then, you’ll be allowed the time to become a little more
“Sacred” yourself –
You know – along with God – in the land of the living.
