A FRENZY OF JOY

Countries are like big shoes and little shoes
Walking around –
Some without too much direction and others with almost none at all.

Countries are also like lips
Some used to mock, others to kiss –
While the rarest of all can sometimes even be poetic.

Some countries have long memories and others almost none at all –
The latter due to centuries of unacknowledged crimes against others.

People themselves can also be like shoes, lips, or memories –
But, in spite of that, all are capable of dancing when the music starts.

When the music starts, there is no “I” and no “you” –
There’s only a “whee” caught up in accelerating circles of joy.

Logically, this means that dancing should be more popularly encouraged –
Whether in culture, play, or spirituality.

The elderly keep time by nodding along –
Tapping their toes.
The children, however, run riot – attempting to imitate the adults’ complex steps
As well as all their motions and emotions –
Resulting in a wild, yet oddly calm, frenzy of joy.

WHEN YOU LET GO

When you let your ego go – and become nobody –
You’ll be surrendering to an even greater inner and outer life!

And, eventually, when you discover your “true self” – whatever it is –
It certainly won’t be your same old ego-directed “movie.”

When you let your ego go – and become nobody –
Joy starts “bubbling up” –
Leading you to experience a lifetime of continual surprises –
When you won’t need to worship God any longer –
Because you’ll understand that God has begun lighting you up.

It’s not that you’ll be so great
Or important
Or have much significance at all.

God “lights up” all God’s creatures,
Including human beings,
Whenever we, as humans, let our egos go and start living our “true lives.”

That’s when God can be heard singing –
And yes, sometimes, even “dancing,” high up, in the passing clouds.

That’s when, much to our surprise,
We’ll find that God has, for some reason, started worshipping us!

GOD OF MANY COLORS, MANY FLAVORS

God comes in many colors, many flavors –

A fan opens:

Purple dragons
Breathe fire down from dark mountains above –

Flipping the fan over –

Brilliant angels
Are dancing in a perfect circle –

At the center of that circle
A lone deer drinks.

God knows everything by “knowing” nothing –
God doesn’t need to “know” – because God simply is.

So, isn’t it true that, sometimes, we can learn the most about God
When we’ve forgotten God entirely.

Pulling on our boots, we decide to go out –

Where are we going?

To find God, of course, the God of many colors,
Many flavors –

The God who we no longer remember
Because, unfortunately, we somehow, somewhere, have misplaced
Our true selves.

A DANCE OF JOY

Usually, one doesn’t meet God personally,
And, even in that case, ordinarily just by accident.

We pass by, and only later realize
Something happened –
Maybe just a momentary impression –
Like noticing stars looking like astral “white flowers”
Or a simple shrub beside the path, when hit by the sun, turning into a “star.”

It’s the joy arising in our hearts
That tells us God has just passed by.

Unexpectedly, we feel like dancing –
Even though the world might think us crazy –

And we are – but only for God.

Our heart starts beating an internal drum:

Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy

Our feet leave the ground –
And, suddenly,
We’re in the air!

Who says there’s no such thing as ecstasy
In North America?

DANCING WITH A WILD GOD

God is so wild,
That the authorities decided to seal the Holy Spirit up
Inside stone buildings with long narrow aisles
And steeples like tall
Pointy fingers.

God is so wild,
That people aren’t permitted
To say anything that’s not already been said a million times before.

God is so wild,
That we wear business suits
To worship –
In order to demonstrate our good order.

When we pray in public, we do it all together –
But, generally, quietly –
Because we don’t want to risk sending God
Over the top.

God is so wild
That we lock our hearts up in tiny jeweled theological boxes
So we’ll never be tempted to reject our lifetime of clichés.

God is so beautiful
So true, so loving –
That without all these solid protections:

We might start dancing, wildly, along with God –
Out there –
In the violet twilight
Of our beautifully naked streets.
