SOUL ARTISTS

Why spend time with anyone else?

If you don’t know a soul artist
Then take the next best thing – and read them.

A true soul artist can reach you through their books
Extract your heart
And throw it up to the stars!

When your heart reaches those stars
You’ll gain the perspective you’ve needed back here on earth.

Spiritually, our world is dusty and confusing – filled with misdirection –
So why not look around
Search through all the people you’ve ever met –
And reminisce about each and every book you’ve read –
Is there a soul artist there?

It’ll be like meeting the love of your life –
But better –
Glorious, overflowing with joy –
Salvific.

A soul artist can paint a picture of you
Appearing like an angel of God.

Peer into that mirror –
To say: “Yes!”

TO LOVERS OF LEARNING

You are my friends
No matter where you live –
Alabama or Ukraine.

For some reason you’ve discovered the secret of being a “true” human being
Through a desire to know everything!

Primary school teachers hurled straight ‘A’s’ at your head
While other children were envious because, for you, it was so obviously not “work”–
Just pure joy.

You’re getting what you want,
Have wanted, and will always want in the future.

It’s a lot like cracking open walnuts –
Or oysters –
This peculiar ambition of the mind!

Stars shine brightest in blackest nights – especially when looking up
Waves arrive at a shore without end
Based upon the love God promised us at birth.

The moon smiles –
Even though just partly lit –
But the sun laughs out loud because it’s day’s turn now.

Let’s drink to old age –
And greet Jules, our first grandchild,
In this New Age – filled with joy and dread –
Mixed up, shaken like a fizzy,
By the Mistress of the Universe.

“A TRUE HUMAN BEING IS NOT HUMAN!”

From “A Surprise of Roses” by Rumi

Rumi is talking here about the “true self” –
While “humans” are egos with no idea who they really are –
So, the day a human can remove “herself” from herself –
Is like throwing a key away that no longer fits the lock
Like being surprised by a kiss that touches only air
Or a play marriage that children solemnly enact.

After one stops claiming their human ego –
What’s left is God – and nothing but God.
Perhaps it may take you a long while to accept this –
Perhaps you’ll hear friends and neighbors muttering, “How dare you!”
And yet, there’s no going back – given what little’s left behind.

It’s true that, at this point, one has no alternative
But to continue going forward and claim God for oneself!
Especially, given that God is free, you might well decide – why not you too?
Why not escape your narrow ego commitments and become free yourself?

God freely fills the night sky with bright and pulsing stars –
Also, God’s always free to laugh – any time and any place –
And, God as a child, one day, became Jesus
Willing to die “ugly” on a cross.

Since no one has ever been able to kill God however –
Whenever they have tried, the result has only been infinitely more God!

NOTHING BUT GOD

“The fireflies, twinkling among the leaves,
make the stars wonder.” Tagore (“Fireflies”)

In the past, they called this “magic”
Now, we call it “wonder” –
Actually, it’s just the border of God’s robes
Brushing like wind through treetops
Sparkling with thousands of tiny intermittently-flickering living lights.

We would recognize this if ever we decided to look up
But we don’t –
Because we no longer have interest in spiritual evidences of God.

And, yet, there still remains a repeated murmur
Way back in the depths of our hearts –
A whisper about the promise of what’s coming.

In truth, underneath all our disbelief, we still believe in God –
We know it’s God who’s been knocking at our door –
Even though we’ve completely forgotten God’s name.

Beyond all the tall church steeples
And even before human hypocrisy has completely died down –
If we just permit ourselves to start seeing spiritually
Everything our eyes take in

Will be God – and nothing but God.

HERE COMES THE SUN

Here comes the sun
Here come stars –
Flying around
Above our heads.

Here come feelings
Here comes romance –
We wear them – like rings on our fingers.

There go dreams
When waking –
Like window shades rolling up.

Also, there goes our world – a tiny bit of the universe –
Along with invisible relentless Time –
All gone – just like that!

Only God remains
Carefully repeating the questions we had no answers to.

Yes, God has decided to stay behind –
And has begun filling up nothing
With everything –
All over again.

Here comes the sun
Here come stars
What a relief to see
The unexpected joy in this chapter two!

WHAT IF REALITY IS THE SAME AS GOD?

What if Reality is the same as God –
And we could trust that what we see is reality.

If so, then, to the extent we denigrate reality
By shading truth, ignoring beauty,
Or just being mean –
Wouldn’t that be a slap to God’s face?

If God also is the same as “the Good”?
Then not caring about what’s good
Would be equivalent to dismantling God –
In other words, the failure to reinforce loving kindness in our society
Would permit government officials to hurl migrant children into metallic cages
And, coldly or not, walk away.

God has been knocking at our door –
To the secret entranceway to our innermost self – i.e., to our “soul” –
God wants, most of all, to sit calmly in our heart’s chair –
And be enthroned, emblazoned with light, in our minds.

Yes, God has been calling for a new people –
And wants such people to be “real” –
As “real” as God is –
Not just a bunch of egos, actors, and manipulators.

God primarily wants “makers” – people who’ll make the world “work”
For everybody
Acknowledging that sufficient wealth is available for us all
To be satisfied –
Joyful –
And beautiful as well.

God says it’s time to re-arrange the ancient ideas still extant in the present
So that love takes first priority in human institutions –
And that all of us can feel free to ask what God wants –
Not just what God might, reluctantly, be willing to put up with –
Or what a religion, bearing Jesus’ name, might eventually come to accept –
And, certainly, not some kind of eternal unmediated capitalism.

Don’t be scared,
Don’t get angry –
You can trust God.

So let’s be naïve together – all at the same time –
And venture out into the night – under the distant flickering stars –
And say “yes!” to everything God loves,
Has loved, and wants us to continue loving in the future.

ONLY IF YOUR HEART SAYS SO

Is God “immanent” – within us?

Yes, if you allow it.

But is God imminent only for human beings?

Humans do have the best minds – but is that all that matters?
What about crickets, blue birds,
Stars bursting with ultraviolet light?

Really isn’t everything infused in some way with God?
Isn’t everything – being and nonbeing alike –
Holy?

By ignoring the omnipresence of the holy
We’re about to brush our blue-green earth
Off the table –
Mindlessly wasting its beauty.

Dear people, you need to think about changing your minds –
And start opening up to and valuing what’s really sacred!
Everything you see, feel, taste, touch, think,
And remember is Holy.

God is everywhere

But only if your heart says so!

A DANCE OF JOY

Usually, one doesn’t meet God personally,
And, even in that case, ordinarily just by accident.

We pass by, and only later realize
Something happened –
Maybe just a momentary impression –
Like noticing stars looking like astral “white flowers”
Or a simple shrub beside the path, when hit by the sun, turning into a “star.”

It’s the joy arising in our hearts
That tells us God has just passed by.

Unexpectedly, we feel like dancing –
Even though the world might think us crazy –

And we are – but only for God.

Our heart starts beating an internal drum:

Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy

Our feet leave the ground –
And, suddenly,
We’re in the air!

Who says there’s no such thing as ecstasy
In North America?
