“LAYERING”

Our minds “read” reality through differing layers of abstraction
Because human beings embody a complex architecture of consciousness
Made up of different “levels” of virtualization using mental abstraction.

For example, the micro-physical level is on a radically different level
From the “normal” human body level –
When we move our arm, the mental abstraction of “arm”
Lies on a different level from the millions of cells making up that arm
Which, in turn, is on a different level from the gazillions of electrons making up those cells.

So, given these different levels of “reality” –
Our minds virtualize “arm” as an ordinary everyday mental abstraction
As part of our overall physical self –
While our minds also have the capacity to visualize, using imagination,
The underlying cells and electrons supporting this “top” level of human reality.

God’s reality, however, encompasses reality at all levels.
Jesus indicated his understanding of this by teaching his disciples that God
“Numbers” the very hairs on our heads. (Mathew 10:30).

So, what is the next layer of abstraction that might become available to our human minds?
I think it’s a “human/God” level of experiential Love, Truth, Justice, and Beauty –
Which, in turn, would require a fresh spiritual language and accompanying supportive culture
To attain this newly-exposed world of reality existing beyond
All previous levels of human abstraction.

With the availability of a new language, fresh realities could open up to our “true selves”
So as to experience living “like” God would live if God were a human being – just like us.

THE APOTHEOSIS OF HUMAN SPIRITUAL ENVY

When Jesus first appeared
Speaking as if he was related to God – personally –
And implying he might even be a human embodiment of God –
It wasn’t just the Romans and Jewish high priests
Who viewed that claim as a threat.

Regular, everyday religiously-faithful people,
Reacted badly as well –
To the audacity of placing himself ahead of Moses,
Greater than David or Solomon,
And even surpassing Isaiah, Elijah, and Jeremiah.

They murmured, “Just who does hethink he is?”

Jesus appeared among everyday “good” people
Who, potentially, had the ability to make a spiritual “leap”
Directly to God
By accepting him like his disciples did –
But they refused –
In fact, he made them as angry as possible –
Which resulted in their secret wish for the authorities stop him.

And that wish was fulfilled.

What made it possible for “good people” to desire the destruction of Jesus –
A human being who, correctly, believed he was speaking for God?

The answer is what eventually became the Crucifixion/Resurrection myth.

They hated him so much for his apparent “hubris”
That they wrenched away his humanity
And replaced it with a “Christian myth”
So they could sleep soundly again
And never need reflect upon what an acceptance
Of Jesus’ (as well as their own) “human/God” life
Might mean.

SILLY, SUBLIME MAN

Diner Mystic left church behind,
But ended up coming back to sit with Jesus
Because, eventually, he came to understand Jesus
Was who they said he was –
A human being actually capable of “mirroring” God –
While living in a human/God duality.

Diner Mystic left the Church 40 years ago
And returned when he was able to say “Jesus Christ” –
Numbering himself among the others who are able to say this –
Including Mary Magdalene (the first), as well as the other Mary who Jesus taught spirituality,
His own mother Mary –
The women at the Cross –
His disciples –
And then, last but not least, Saul/Paul.

It took Diner Mystic a long time to arrive at this point –
And he apologizes for his tardiness –
But that was the path necessary for him “to say it real” –
He had to leave in order to come back –
He had to travel to the ends of the universe
To find his very own feet.

Silly, sublime man!

TOUCHING A DREAM WOUND

God is a spiritual relative about whom we’ve only distantly heard
But never actually met.

We do know that, one day, we’ll have an encounter
But it’ll be a surprise:

One example might be in a dream:

We’re deboarding a train
And notice someone in the passing crowd who looks familiar –
The resemblance to our first love so remarkable
That we can never forget it.

Meeting God “face to face” would have to be something like this –
An individual resurrection experience –
Similar to when the disciples didn’t know who they were talking to –
And only figured it out later.

Yes, sometimes our first encounter with God is in an oblique way –
We meet, and then instantly forget it’s happened –
The proof not in a wound we’re able to plunge a hand into –
But the reverse –
When we sense a gentle hand entering our own body –
Delicately touching our heart –
And spilling “life” out of us –
Everywhere.

Yes, sometimes, God can enter us through a dream –
If we’re interested enough
To remember when it happens.

FEEDING FIVE THOUSAND

There was no real “physical” miracle here –
So this shouldn’t be seen as qualifying Jesus as “God.”

However, there was a profound teaching –
About sharing.

As the day wore on –
The disciples started wondering
How the thousands of people who had come to hear Jesus were going to be fed.

At first, the disciples considered going out and buying food at nearby villages –
But, instead, Jesus said: “You feed them” –
Instructing his disciples to start sharing their food as an example
Of how followers of Jesus should respond to a common need.

This particular teaching, at the time, was such a striking “symbolic action”
That, eventually, it became established in Christianity as the Eucharist –
Illustrating that followers of Jesus, when meeting to share teaching about God,
Should also share a meal-in-common – that included everyone
Men and women, poor and rich, old and young.

The Gospels refer to 5,000 men being fed,
But the heart of the story actually centers on the biblically-invisible women –
Without which there would have been no food to share.

The men came to listen to Jesus without (like men sometimes do) thinking ahead about food –
While the disciples only started becoming concerned about it later in the day –
But the women had already planned ahead
And brought enough food to feed their families and friends.

Jesus intuited this, of course, because his soul was both male and female.

This first “all-people” spiritual dinner turned into a big outdoor picnic –
Celebrating God’s word as taught by Jesus –
Along with the sharing of food by the women enabling everyone to be fed –
With plenty of leftovers.

This was a teaching about spiritual democracy –
That all persons, of whatever age or sex, stand equally before God –
Symbolized by their common sharing of food.

There was no “magic” here at all –
The teaching was simply that Jesus’ followers, using their initiative and faith,
Should simply share what they had with others –
(As opposed to the segregated eating by classes and sexes common at the time).

This teaching eventually was included in all four Gospels – establishing a new social pattern for Jesus’ followers –
Ultimately becoming the Eucharist (which, unfortunately, over time, has largely lost its original meaning).

Neither the Christian Church nor the rest of the world, has yet to fully embrace this teaching –
That followers of Jesus (whether Christian or not) are called upon
To start the reign of God –
By starting to share what they have.

If America, for its part, could drop its primitive faith and reliance on military and economic power
And start sharing what it has with the rest of the world
Wouldn’t we – especially under the leadership of women (who respond naturally to people’s physical needs) –
Be capable of successfully feeding, clothing, and housing all eight billion of us?

Wouldn’t that be the miracle God wants –
For human beings to thoughtfully and lovingly share the world’s resources with one another.

As I said, Jesus didn’t believe in physical miracles like the “magical multiplication” of loaves and fishes –
But he did believe in spiritual miracles involving the kinds of changes possible for a human heart

If just given a little “spiritual push”.
