IS THIS SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?

God may be more like a quality, a mode, or a channel – like spontaneity or freedom –
Than a person or thing.

God also has no ascertainable “size” (like a universe or multi-universes)
And certainly doesn’t have the kind of “power” allegedly possessed by comic book heroes –
God is actually more like “love” or “truth” or “justice” or “beauty.”

God also is not a number – no matter how infinite –
Instead, God is a word that anybody can say.

Nor is God an ancient idea, even if once brilliant but now frozen in space –
Rather, God is always moving – like wind or water –
In other words, God is always a surprise to human beings.

One can’t “swear” by God, much less even know for certain God exists,
Yet it would be a mistake to give up on God
By adopting some substitute – like science, technology, or some political ideology.

Invisible, God, nevertheless, is always present.

God knows what we want and, more importantly, what we need
And is happy to provide us with the latter – whether we’re ready or not.

God takes our hand, and gently, kisses it.

God gives us a lifetime of gifts which, invariably, we forget receiving.

Here’s one of God’s gifts – right now:
Close your eyes and turn around three times – then open up your eyes again –
Everything you see from that moment on – and for the rest of your life –
Is a gift from God!

Is this so difficult to understand?

THE PEARL THAT CAN’T BE FOUND

It’s smart to be humble –
Because everything’s constantly changing.

Today, the king loves you,
But, tomorrow, you might find yourself out on the street.

So, generally, it is smart to be humble
Because you can’t fully appreciate life
If, unconsciously, you’re taking the gifts for granted
That are already yours.

When you start opening up to love – like a heliotropic flower –
You’ll start becoming aware of all the gifts coming in
As well as the gifts going out.

On the other hand, if you insist upon remaining proud –
You won’t understand anything at all
And find yourself sitting up on top of a mountain –
Unaware it’s collapsing beneath you.

Moreover, the pearl you were obsessed with finding
Will remain hidden deep inside your heart –
Because it’s not now, nor has it ever been, the subject of sale.

TRAGEDY OF THE SPECIES

God incites us to love others –
Whenever we can take attention away from ourselves –
Even for a moment.

In God’s “school,” there are various lessons to learn –
Lessons of the senses, lessons of the spirit,
And lessons taught by the other people in our lives.

Unfortunately, as soon as any of these confronts us
We want them to go away –
Because we view them as a distraction from our true love –
The “ego-self.”

The problem with ego, however,
Is that it’s empty – without true reality –
Like a balloon with clusters of mental images printed on the outside
That’s been inflated inside our heads
So there’s little room for anything else –
Also, egos are highly addictive
So any threatened de-flation
Will instantly be met with a frantic search for something – anything –
To re-inflate it.

We equate our ego’s destruction with extinction –
Something even more painful and final than physical death –
In spite of this, however, we carry around a strong desire for a spiritual “explosion” –
Like a pack on our back –
But have been waiting to open it – only after we die.

All the gifts we have ever desired are already inside us –
But, unfortunately, instead of opening them while still alive,
And enjoying them,
We’ve been waiting for the time when we no longer have hands, eyes, or heart –
That is, we’ve decided to wait until it’s too late –

And that’s why the destiny of humanity –
Up to this point –
Has mostly been tragedy.
