TIME IS NOT REAL

The past and future are not “real” – but simply “mental bookkeeping” –
True reality is present only in the “Now” –
The sole “eternity” that exists
And where God, in fact, actually lives.

This “Now” is experienced, ordinarily, only when we get “out of our minds” –

However, when we experience life mainly “inside” our minds,
Real life will continue on in its spontaneous and colorful way – on the outside –
Totally ignoring our inner obsessions.

This “outside” life could be ours – all the time –
If we ever decided to “wake up”
And start sharing life with God in the “Now.”

NOT THE PAPER VERSION

If love is the “background reality” of the universe
Then everything else must be fantasy, dreams, or other mental images,
Especially if driven by ambition, desire for fame, or accumulation of power and riches.

If God is love,
Then traditional worship practices, systematic theology, and ancient church structures
Are just so much “straw” out in the fields of spiritual life –

In sum, since love is the only true reality
Why are we talking about anything else?

Of course, when we talk about love –
We’re talking about intelligent love
We’re talking about freedom as a pre-condition to love,
And we’re talking about three-dimensional love –
Not the paper version,

Right?

TRAGEDY OF THE SPECIES

God incites us to love others –
Whenever we can take attention away from ourselves –
Even for a moment.

In God’s “school,” there are various lessons to learn –
Lessons of the senses, lessons of the spirit,
And lessons taught by the other people in our lives.

Unfortunately, as soon as any of these confronts us
We want them to go away –
Because we view them as a distraction from our true love –
The “ego-self.”

The problem with ego, however,
Is that it’s empty – without true reality –
Like a balloon with clusters of mental images printed on the outside
That’s been inflated inside our heads
So there’s little room for anything else –
Also, egos are highly addictive
So any threatened de-flation
Will instantly be met with a frantic search for something – anything –
To re-inflate it.

We equate our ego’s destruction with extinction –
Something even more painful and final than physical death –
In spite of this, however, we carry around a strong desire for a spiritual “explosion” –
Like a pack on our back –
But have been waiting to open it – only after we die.

All the gifts we have ever desired are already inside us –
But, unfortunately, instead of opening them while still alive,
And enjoying them,
We’ve been waiting for the time when we no longer have hands, eyes, or heart –
That is, we’ve decided to wait until it’s too late –

And that’s why the destiny of humanity –
Up to this point –
Has mostly been tragedy.

THE APPLE OF LIFE

The snake tricked us
Into eating an apple –
But the conversation wasn’t really about apples.

Instead, the snake whispered:
“Watch me shed my skin
And become something entirely new.”

The snake was happy
About its rebirth,
Viewing it as an exchange of realities –
Life and freedom in return for work and risk.

God never barred the tree of life from us –
We’re able to walk over any time, take a bite, and
Become fully “alive” –
But, after that first bite, each subsequent step needs to be in full reality –
Looking at God – “face to face” –
Letting our “ego-self” die!

Instead of doing that,
We decided to take a long slow route
Out of the Garden –
And around the world –
For thousands of generations –
Enswirled in brilliant denial dreams –

Destined to keep going
Until we get bored enough, spiritually, to wake up
And begin living in “true reality” –

Biting cleanly into the apple
Of life.

GOD IS ALIVE!

Our mind resembles a tumbling-down mountain stream –
So all we’re able to think about are interior “rushing sounds.”

How do we stop a tumbling-down mind long enough
To notice the shadows of leaves moving in the wind –
How “wake up” inside such an interior “commotion”?

We need to step back away from our rushing minds –
From these cinematic “selves” –
To rest a while in a country of peace –
Where “true reality” abides.

It’s difficult for us to experience love in a rushing-by life –
And almost impossible to enjoy peace when agitated –
We know it would be a surprise to discover God alive in our hearts during such times –
Since the only place God can ever truly “come alive” – is inside us.

For individuals, the heart is the equivalent of the solar system’s sun
Acting to center our lives – from beginning to end –

After all, isn’t “Love” what we like to call God when we finally understand
How truly “alive” God is!

GOD IS SPIRIT

People imagine a cartoon God
Because, too much of their time, they are living cartoon lives.

If true reality ever touched them
They might simply disappear.

Historically, it was easier to believe in a cartoon god
As a “drum major” for cartoon selves – that is, for our “egos”–
Rather than engage in an earnest search for a “real” God.

Jesus, Buddha, and Mohammed all taught God was “spirit,”
And, given that a “true self” also is spirit –
And in the same sense –
There always existed a possibility of ecstatic “marriage” between the two.

If we believe God is a material God acting in a material world –
Then that is a complete misunderstanding of who God is – and what the world is.

Instead, God is “love,”
And that’s how we meet God – in love relationships.

God is “truth,”
Another good way to meet God – when we have the courage to tell the truth.

God is “justice” –
We encounter God each time we take a just action.

Finally, God is “beauty” –
So appreciating the beauty in our lives is another excellent way to experience God.

God, and our relationship to God, really, have nothing to do with “egos”
Or materialistic searches for “wealth,” “power,” or “notoriety” –

Instead, God is spirit and only spirit –

And that’s what the “true self” is too.

EVERYTHING IN ITS RIGHTFUL PLACE

The trouble with costume parties –
Especially Halloween ones –
Is that we already wear costumes every day.

For us, the world’s a stage –
With set pieces –
Produced for family, work, and friends.

We always play “ourselves” of course,
But, as director, we’re
Capable, at a moment’s notice,
Of changing script, actors, location,
And even meaning.

We do this faster than eye can follow –
Faster than memory encodes –
And it’s a seamless entertainment –
Performed for an audience of one.

We find ourselves living inside our own movie –
A production of hope, pathos and tragedy –

But we can never touch it
Since nothing produced in this manner will ever be fully real.

Instead, we hold life close, like a secret deck of cards,
And postpone true reality
Until the moment after death –

So, for now, everything can appear – so far as the world’s concerned – to be
In its rightful place.
