ONCE ALL THE PRESENTS ARE OPENED

It’s good to be humble
Yet, sometimes, it’s good to recognize that the universe
Has been patiently waiting just for you.

It’s good to be modest
But, sometimes, you might imagine becoming a rock star
Singing to people shouting out your name.

Personally, I’m a nobody – and completely unknown –
But what a luxury to be so free –
Since no one’s been expecting anything from me!

I have a secret, though, that God’s whispering:

“One day, many people may be thankful
For writing down what’s needed.”

Fortunately, however, by then I’ll no longer be here
And that’s, in fact, what God has wanted –
No envy –
Knowing I’d be long gone
Once all the presents are being opened!

SPIRIT LIKE THE WIND

The Spirit is “like the wind”
But what does this mean?

It means that if you ever find yourself in a corner
And, using all your strength, you can’t get out –
There’ll always be a door available –
If you only put your hand out.

It also means that even if you become as successful as a movie star
The next thing that happens might be some kind of personal disaster.

It means that life frequently is outside one’s control –
So you’ll have to be brave
And humble
And, often, you’ll need to be both at the same time!

It means that God sometimes has a somewhat severe sense of humor –
But just not a malicious one.

In fact, you wouldn’t even be alive without wind –
Which is the same as your breath –
Especially since you don’t even need to think about breathing –
Because it’s unconscious – the same as your “true self.”

The moment this “true self” becomes fully conscious, you’ll find yourself enlightened –
This is at the core of what Jesus, the Buddha, and Mohammed
Were all trying to teach us!

SEA OF WHITENESS

Western people live in a sea of whiteness
Like they’re on a big ship traveling from one white land to another
Observing colored people only from a distance
Through tiny portholes, and then only
Dimly.

White people can be cruel at times – without thinking about it –
About the pain they cause –
While still relishing all the societal buttons and levers
Designed especially for their personal use.

They can’t see into the past
Because, for a long time, they’ve been living off its fruits –
They also can’t clearly make out the present because, to them, it’s wholly white –
And the future promises to be more of the same –
That is, if they have anything to say about it.

What could change?

White people’s souls could become more humble – more human;
Christianity could begin disconnecting itself from the tight grip of capitalism;
Or the old Gods might get re-shuffled – into surprising new patterns.

One day, however, Nature might commence a long and serious talk with us
Sometime before the human world comes to an end
When, from that vantage point, all our political and racial differences
Might no longer appear to be so great
After all.

THE PEARL THAT CAN’T BE FOUND

It’s smart to be humble –
Because everything’s constantly changing.

Today, the king loves you,
But, tomorrow, you might find yourself out on the street.

So, generally, it is smart to be humble
Because you can’t fully appreciate life
If, unconsciously, you’re taking the gifts for granted
That are already yours.

When you start opening up to love – like a heliotropic flower –
You’ll start becoming aware of all the gifts coming in
As well as the gifts going out.

On the other hand, if you insist upon remaining proud –
You won’t understand anything at all
And find yourself sitting up on top of a mountain –
Unaware it’s collapsing beneath you.

Moreover, the pearl you were obsessed with finding
Will remain hidden deep inside your heart –
Because it’s not now, nor has it ever been, the subject of sale.
