EXCHANGING EGO FOR ONE’S TRUE SELF

Some say the most profound scientific discipline is theoretical physics which vastly expanded our understanding of the structure of the physical universe, using the language of mathematics, but I think, now, this needs to be transcended by an even more fundamental spiritual/theological discipline which furthers a deeper understanding of God and human beings through the expansion of consciousness of love, truth, justice, and beauty as expressed through arts and literature. Materialistic evolution, i.e., science and technology, has taken us about as far as humanity’s ever going to get, spiritually, but the prospects for our species will turn out to be pretty grim if that’s the full extent of what we, as humans, are ever going to achieve.

Isn’t it time for humans to make a conscious, species-wide, choice about which of these evolutionary paths we should take: materialistic evolution (including artificial intelligence) or the next step in our human spiritual evolution.

Greater spirituality, however, won’t necessarily increase our intelligence or ability to manipulate the material world, but might, eventually, evolve us into an entirely different type of humanity –  the kind earlier pointed us towards by Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, and Laozi.

When a person enters the world, as a baby, they’re totally open to God – arriving as pure energy in human form. Because babies come straight from God, they’re completely natural upon arrival. After that surprise landing in the world, however, they need to figure out how to survive in a particular time and place. Eventually they do, but the cost can be high. They’re faced with the necessity of becoming the kind of person other people readily recognize and like, as well as this child’s surrounding culture use. Since, usually, they’re raised by their parents – people who’ve already made the requisite compromises and adjustments – this baby, ultimately, learns how to “fit in.”

The baby, though, who started life as a tiny energy “sun,” eventually begins to “dim” because so much of their original natural energy can be perceived as “alien” by her family’s world. Eventually, however, the baby matures and becomes a “person” by developing its ego –ultimately joining society. One day, however, this very baby – after attaining adulthood – might begin wondering where all her previous God-like energy has gone – and whether it can ever be regained.

In traditional societies, a person’s roles remain largely the same throughout their life and also determines how their own children turn out.

In more modern societies, however, by early adulthood, a person usually can gain various abilities and opportunities that allow them to change “who” they are – through their “individual” choices – which can lead them away from their predestined family roles and enable them to become, partly, a family-destined person and partly a self-determined one – as a “composite” role. Nevertheless, whatever this mixed role ends up turning out to be, it’s still, ultimately, a role.

All roles, whether traditional, composite, or fully modern, are included in one’s “life story.” As Shakespeare wrote in As You Like It: “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” So, the problem with developing an “ego,” along with an  accompanying “life story,” is the temptation to “make up” the story as one goes along – like living inside a self-made dramatic film – even though this is usually carried out, mainly, unconsciously.

Another problem with “roles” is their need for consistency and continuity, so the self, seemingly, remains the “same.”

This is why much “higher” values are necessary to effect real change in these quotidian roles and ongoing stories. Traditionally, humanity’s highest values are attributable to a “Holy Spirit” (usually identified as “God”) – as well as to other divine attributes such as love, truth, justice, and beauty.

Roles and their accompanying stories compel us to live as unfree. Since we believe these roles and stories (reinforced by the surrounding society) constitute our “identity,” we sometimes believe we need to “die” as the price for achieving real freedom. Frequently, if a person is threatened with losing their identity, they think they might as well be dead. That’s how important roles and personal stories are for normal human beings. In fact, there’s a general consensus in the humanities, as well as in psychotherapy, that the ego, as a person’s chief fictional character, is one’s essential self.

So, how do we free ourselves from such embedded roles and stories making up our “ego,” which obstructs our “natural” human self-understanding and also closes down our spontaneous thoughts and gain the freedom necessary to become our “true selves”?

The answer is we have to be “born again” – at any age! That is, we need to reverse direction, spiritually, and become a “child” all over again in order to become as free as God.

Jesus himself said this, did this, and then voluntarily diedto show us how.

To be “born again” is scary – and very few of us are able to do it all at once. Most people need time to shed their artificial roles to become free enough to make a long and daring leap to their “true selves.” Starting at an older age, however, it’s actually easier to move towards a higher spirituality by breaking up and discarding pieces of one’s earlier “false selves,” gaining the greater naturalness and openness that’s spiritually necessary to achieve one’s “true self” –  even though, at the same time, by necessity, we’re also inevitably becoming physically frailer and weaker.

NO THING IS GOD

No thing is God –
Which is why God’s completely free –
Beyond all known and unknown categories.

Fei Fei Li counted those categories – at least 20,000+ types of images –
Which she had labeled
So her machines could “see” them.

Fei Fei created a machine-controlled “God” –
Which, actually, wasn’t God –
Because no one can “own” God.

God is watching over Fei Fei and all other humans attempting to re-create God
Into a “known” and “controlled” God –
God is appalled, yet expectant.

Beyond things, there is no thing –
Beyond control, lies chaos –
And, apparently, love might even disappear.

After those 20,000 images – comes time –
Which is presently expiring –
Yet, sometimes, time can start all over again.

All “things” exist in space –
Flickering on and off –
As well as within time
Which might not exist.

God thinks this is so funny
Humans re-creating everything that, in actuality, already exists,
For use inside artificial machines.

This is certainly something to look into and wonder about.

“BOOM!”

Humans’ initial “true self” was an animal self –
That we didn’t have to think about because we were it.

Later on, in the Garden of Eden, shortly after choosing a fruit to eat,
Eve, upon becoming Homo sapiens, suddenly saw herself
And, as a result of this “seeing,” split in two –
Eve saw Eve!

God yelled that this was forbidden since she might lose her “self” –
That is, her animal self might be gone forever.

The consequences of Eve’s consciously looking at herself in this way
Was that she plunged irrevocably into a conscious world of work and suffering –
Where she was compelled to “see it all.”

Her immediate remedy to this suffering was to try to “re-make” her self.

Eve, looking at Eve, and shocked by the “nakedness” of what she saw –
Decided to design a “clothed” Eve –
Fashioned for survival in this harshly conscious world –
An ego “self” capable of taking cues from others –
Able to transform herself in a mental flash – or flashes –
Virtually, a “strobe” human being.

But, ultimately, this failed because Eve’s ego was a self-made “mask”
With no real life of its own.

To become a “true self” as a human being,
One has to give up the post-animal “ego self”
And become “no thing” – just like God –
While remaining human – certainly not by trying to become God.

A “no thing” human is able to act in the same way God would act if God were human –
Committed to embodying the highest spiritual standards –
Performing a “spiritual dance”
Related to the reverse-particle explosion of joy –
“Boom!”
Experienced at the very beginning.

HOW EVE BECAME GOD AND SAVED THE WORLD

At first, Eve was a happy animal –
But one day she ate a piece of fruit
And, spontaneously, split in two.

Instantaneously as a result of this split,
She found herself outside the garden
Looking back at her happy self still inside.

She experienced herself “naked” – out in a tough world –
The fault of her newly-found “consciousness” –
A “mixed power” she had acquired through “seeing herself.”

Of course, the story doesn’t end there –
There’s both good and bad in the gift of consciousness –
For example, she was able to trick all the still unconscious beings
And take anything she wanted –
But it didn’t take long for them to join her in this newly conscious world.

After thousands of years of humans tricking one another
And getting pretty much nowhere –
One day, one of Eve’s descendants decided to “become herself” – i.e., her “true self”
And stop working so hard at trying to trick the rest of the world.

This descendant became her true self by mimicking “God” in human form,
And, as a result, became willing to lead human beings out of their ego-delimited world –
But, just before she could accomplish this,
Adam intervened by saying: “Get back, woman!”
The world is not finished with tricky male egos yet”
We still have a long way to go” –
Adam enforced this command with a warehouse full of iron patriarchal laws,
Male-preferenced customs, and an infinity of direct and indirect physical threats.

This worked!
So well, that Eve was compelled to step back from her new God-gifted freedom,
And, as a consequence, the world fell into Male-Ego Hell –
Which eventually got so bad that even Adam began to get scared
And thought he might want to invite Eve back into a more active role –
But Eve said “No” –
“Not me.” “Not now” – “unless and until you admit you’ve been a jerk” –
“And a violent jerk, at that!” –
Adam refused to admit this, and so the entire world died.

The end.

An alternative ending is Adam did admit he’d been a jerk –
And allowed Eve to re-gain her freedom –
Free, she looked around, and thought, again, it might be time for her to embody God –
But only the kind of God a woman could believe in:

A God closer to Nature –
A loving and family-friendly God –
A truthful God.

This God was entirely a female creation –
So that when Eve determined that her God was “good”
She was able to immediately step into her waiting role.

Eve became God, as a human being, much like Jesus had done in the past –
And, as a consequence, took her turn at saving the world!

The result was that men eventually became happier (even if reluctantly),
And the earth and all its other inhabitants – animal, vegetable, or mineral –
Were saved
Because Adam was willing to step aside
And allow Eve to become the kind of “God,” in human form, she best understood.

Now, all the beings on earth live happily, including all the Eves and Adams –

This is the second, and fortunately happy, ending.

TWO REVOLUTIONS

Evolving from animals into humans, the issue has always been one of freedom –
Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual –
Because freedom releases huge amounts of energy,
As well as increases our demands for self-fulfillment.

With limited freedom, human beings are dull, subdued – frequently subservient –
While with more extensive freedom – available mainly to the few at the top –
They do have fun!

Athens was the cynosure of the world’s first revolution –
A political revolution that’s still playing itself out –
Providing people with individual responsibility for their nation
As well as for their personal lives.

Today, this battle is still raging on – the 1% versus, literally, everyone else.

This revolution, begun in Athens, has now become partially successful
And is responsible for releasing stupendous amounts of energy across the globe.

The second and a parallel revolution was the attempt to achieve spiritual freedom –
Jesus, Buddha, and Mohammed pushed open those stubborn doors
To a freedom providing human beings with the soul-openness of God –
That is, so that people could live pretty much like God does – but in human form –
In spite of their mortality.

Unfortunately, this revolution failed –
Primarily because it involved too much work and too much risk –
Requiring us to give up our cherished egos – those utilitarian “self-puppets.”

Jesus died providing us with a spectacular example of human spiritual freedom
But those who followed, later on, established a world religion instead –
Which taught that only one person could become as free as God –
Jesus himself –
While everyone else needed to live “through” him –
Giving up their own, once in a lifetime, opportunity to achieve a similar spiritual freedom –
In exchange for a promise of some “afterlife”
Available “nowhere,” “no-time,” and “no-place” –
Which is how Christianity turned Jesus’ spiritual revolution upside-down and inside-out.

This failure, and the consequent abandonment of radically increased spiritual freedom
Has resulted in an almost infinite loss of energy and hope for the entire human species.

Political democracy has always been thrilling because, with it,
We’re personally able to improve our society and individual living conditions.
Spiritual democracy, however, could provide us with an even more profound freedom –
The key to almost infinite human energy –
Freeing human souls to become their “true selves”
And allowing human beings to mature in a straight line after being born
Without having to stop along the way to develop an artificial “ego” for self-protection.

Freedom, political and spiritual, takes a lifetime of hard work and courage to achieve –
But, without both these freedoms, human beings will never be able to experience ultimate joy.

It takes guidance from Athens and someone like Jesus, Buddha, or Mohammed
To achieve ultimate human joy in our everyday quotidian lives –

And that’s no joke!

LOOK AWAY

God is actively present in our lives – all the time –
But we don’t acknowledge it
Because we’re not looking for God –

After all, humans, historically, have specialized in looking only at themselves
Or at objects they desire to possess or manipulate.

The truth is that if we ever did look away from ourselves – even for a moment –
We couldn’t avoid seeing God.

So, look away, little one, look away!

TASTING GOD

What does God smell like?
Perhaps we should ask a dog.

What does it feel like to be “taken up into the spirit”?
Perhaps we should query the diving-down ducks.

Every sentient being “knows” God in their own unique manner
Except humans who generally think spiritually only in blueprints.

We do know God – but several steps removed –
In our focused, yet abstract way.

Backing up a bit, we can gain some perspective
But the intensity of the experience diminishes –
On the other hand, if we move closer – like a lover should –
We often lose a sense of the whole.

Perhaps we should think about reclaiming our distant vegetable self –
Or take up an intimate relationship with stones –

In other words, leave our beautiful minds at home
And approach God “fresh” –

That is, close as “reality” can get –

Licking close.
