THE LAST TRUE HUMAN BEINGS

Jesus is coming through the fields
Looking for you.

Jesus is reading out names
Hoping to gain people’s attention.

Jesus bends to pick a bright flower
Awed by its beauty.

Jesus was never interested in wealth or power
But, instead, love and truth.

Jesus asks us to look directly at God
And, then, fall in love.

Jesus proved this love of God
Can be even more important than life itself.

Jesus rejected hypocrites
And all other self-important people.

Jesus loves neglected human beings –
People without money or power
The black and brown ones
Who he claims are “His” people
In the light of their suffering
And as being the last “true” human beings left on earth!

THE LANGUAGE OF “NO THING”

In God’s realm – beyond speech, form, and image –
Lies a place
Where human language is a lie.

Where reality is expressed only through love.

Not only will it be necessary to lose our ego –
We’ll also be required to lose our stiff adult mind as well

In order to become spontaneous as little children –
So that wars, exploitation, and suffering can finally come to an end

When we’ll be left solely in “God’s Kingdom”–
The one Jesus constantly prayed for.

LIFE AS A HUMAN BEING

God is hardest to acknowledge
When life seems easy.

God appears most frequently to hearts that suffer –
Not those on vacation.

Suffering never ends
But neither does joy.

Joy and suffering make up a bi-colored ball –
Each failing to come into existence without the other.

In fact, we only experience joy
To the same degree we’re willing to suffer.

Isn’t that life
As a human being?

CELEBRATION

There are friends
Who, in reality, aren’t –

Then there’s the Friend
Who’s been patiently waiting for us to call.

But, because we’ve been so busy with the essential
Tasks of living –
Somewhere along the way, unfortunately,
We’ve forgotten how to celebrate “spiritually.”

We’ve been so busy “pissing into the wind” or
“Whistling past death” –
That we haven’t had the time to eat a single celebratory peanut –
Not to speak of that splendid wedding cake.

These days, we no longer take time to get spiritually “drunk” –
Instead, we’ve reserved that particular party for some anticipated “life” to come –
The one where we enter the door of death
And come out the other side in a spectacular display of angelic fireworks.

But what if this is the only celebration permitted
What if this the only “light” we’re ever going to enjoy –
Our sole existence –

Suffering and all –

What then?

ALL THE TIME

Even if you put on an official “coat” of religion,
You probably still won’t achieve what God truly wants –
However, if you courageously open your heart – even a bit –
You’ll quickly find yourself being flooded with loving spirit.

Actually, “God” isn’t God at all –
Because God doesn’t have a name
And disappears whenever we are attempting to use one.

God sometimes may be found out in open fields or beneath gently rustling trees –
You can’t actually see or hear God then,
But, during such times, it is possible to gain a sense of God’s airy touch.

More often, though, God is found in hardship and suffering –
You won’t hear or see God then either,
But, if it’s important to you, you’ll be able to feel God’s presence.

God is known most completely by us
At birth
And death.

The rest of our lives should be just the same –
Yes, God should be that close – all the time.

TEARS OF JOY

Evangelical Christians talk about being “born again” –
As if it’s easy.

And that suffering and dying are nothing more than just saying the words
“Jesus Christ.”

But this is all a sham.

Suffering and dying are very difficult –
As Jesus so graphically demonstrated.

But that’s what it costs –

Dying, to make way for the birth
Of the kind of people God meant for all of us to be –

Pretty much everything in the ancient world had to be destroyed
To make room for that.

It’s the same for each one of us – it won’t be easy –
Giving up and
Starting all over again –

Arriving straight out of a spiritual womb
Into a sky we’ve never experienced before.

At birth, everyone starts crying,
You, your friends, the entire world – everyone –

Tears of joy.

PERSPECTIVE

Hindus tell us life is a dream
While, at Cal Tech, reality is conceived of as particles –
Relying upon these concepts, there appears to be no true reality –
Everything just a trick!

But, if we’re a dream, we’re certainly a real dream,
And if we’re particles, where, after all, did “love” and “truth” come from?

People worry about how a God who’s good,
Can permit suffering to exist –

But, really, isn’t it simply the price of freedom.

Existence is deeply magical – that is, “spiritual” –
And, ordinarily, even though we take it for granted –
We really shouldn’t.

Picture raindrops striking a window –
Are they dreams, particles,
Or tiny gifts from God?

Think about how everything
Is part of everything else –
So intricately interrelated –
If this weren’t true
The world couldn’t exist
And, really, would be just a dream
Or a bunch of particles.

So,
We should be thankful for love, truth, and beauty
Each of which comes in almost infinite varieties –
Because, actually, they’re the only meaningful reality
That we’re ever going to experience.
