TENTATIVE ENCOUNTERS WITH REALITY

Everything – living and nonliving –
Shares, in some way, with God –
Even our sleepy selves.

But this effect tends to disappear
As soon as we experience it –
Yet is the reason it seems so beautiful!

Life appears to be, and is, exquisite
When we experience it slipping through our fingers –

We try our best to hold onto it –
But are able to capture only a few images
In memory or
Imagination.

As we mature, we come to believe
That the mind is “real” –
But this is a lie.

When we dive down into our personal ocean of unreality
Even kisses are only ideas
As we repeatedly lose ourselves in all the infinite dimensions
Of no dimension.

The truth is –

God, and the true self,
May be encountered, only tentatively,
One individual, and one moment,
At a time.

TEARS OF JOY

Evangelical Christians talk about being “born again” –
As if it’s easy.

And that suffering and dying are nothing more than just saying the words
“Jesus Christ.”

But this is all a sham.

Suffering and dying are very difficult –
As Jesus so graphically demonstrated.

But that’s what it costs –

Dying, to make way for the birth
Of the kind of people God meant for all of us to be –

Pretty much everything in the ancient world had to be destroyed
To make room for that.

It’s the same for each one of us – it won’t be easy –
Giving up and
Starting all over again –

Arriving straight out of a spiritual womb
Into a sky we’ve never experienced before.

At birth, everyone starts crying,
You, your friends, the entire world – everyone –

Tears of joy.

SURFING

Human beings desire control in their lives –
Which is both a good, as well as a bad thing.

Actually, life is more like surfing –

If you go too far forward –
Or too far back –

You fall in.

It’s the same with our attempts at control –
Not enough, and life starts to fall apart,
Too much, and it can freeze up.

Western culture teaches that we should strive for as much control in our lives as possible
But this has led to embracing a “material” God.

It’s similar, isn’t it, to what Jesus said about the birds –
Which don’t have to worry about what they eat or wear.
Jesus knew people had to work –
But thought it just wasn’t the most important thing.

The paradox each of us needs to solve
Is how to become our “true self” –
The child that’s still able to play –
In the midst of a responsible adult life.

It is a lot like surfing, isn’t it –
Balance being the most important skill.

Playful as a child –
Responsible as an adult.

This takes a lot of practice
Like all other critical life skills.

WHAT IS “GOD”?

When someone says:

“I love God with all my heart, soul, mind and spirit” –

What “God” is being talking about here?

The God that I mean is not some ancient shibboleth
Or “Big Old Man in the Sky” –
And, certainly not, the puppet God worshipped in too many churches today.

My God is “the Best” – that is, the best that human beings have ever been able to conceive.

For example, for me, this would include:

“Love” coming to life in all its most beautiful manifestations –

“Truth” that’s continually opening up – ever clearer and finer –

“Justice” as “ultimate fairness” – which naturally exists, and

“Beauty” which makes life feel like a “celebration” is about to happen!

What do you think constitutes the “Best”? Or, perhaps even, the “Very Best”?
Tell me, and I’ll be happy to say that what you just said
Is closely-related to, or even a part of, “God.”

It’s that simple, isn’t it?

If you argue “the Best” no longer exists –
Like much Western culture currently treats the word “God” –
Then what has happened is only that you’ve tricked yourself out of yourself.

Actually, “the Best” does exist –
And, traditionally, and rightly, we call it “God.”

When I say “Love” is God – or “God” is Love –
Do you really dare reply that it’s not?

STUNG INTO LIFE

We believe it’s impossible to “be like God” –
So, instead, we dissolve into puffy white clouds
And float across endless blue skies.

We’ve also come to believe that it’s impractical for us to “die”
In order to live,
But, on unique occasions, we’re able to do it anyway.

After all, Jesus did it, and not just at the end of his life –
But every moment of every day –
So, logically,
So can we.

Overhead, “death” circles
Like a buzzing blue-bottle fly.

Go away death!
We don’t want to be stung
Into life
Today.

WAKING UP WHEN YOU’RE ALREADY AWAKE

Ghosts, if they exist, don’t qualify as “Spirit” in God’s eyes –
Neither does any amount of religious enthusiasm –

Spirit is not part of any “Trinity” either, no matter what the Church says –
Nor does it reside solely in people’s immaculate minds.

In fact, Spirit isn’t even “mystical” –
Any more than anything else is.

“Spirit” can best be identified as waking up when you’re already awake!

The West doesn’t value this –
Nor has it even been curious about it –
Mainly, because Spirit isn’t available for commercial or political manipulation –

In fact, the West gave up its love for Spirit a very very long time ago.

Today, we’re like children playing in the sand
Intent on carrying out made-up roles –

Spending time quietly with one another
Until our parents finally call us home.

TWO OF THE OLDER FAITHS

Once, God was a little boy
Who liked to venture outdoors
And play in bright woods or along an endless seashore.

Later, when God grew older – with a full beard –
He enjoyed sitting beside the fire in the evening
And making up stories about people he had once met.

When God died, however, no one knew,
Because – even though God was a friendly old guy –
He mostly preferred his solitude.

****

Once, God was a little girl
Who enjoyed playing with dolls
And baking cookies shaped like stars.

When God became a woman with long hair
and beautiful hips –
As she walked down the street, everyone
Wanted to follow her.

When God died, all the beauty in the world began to fade –
So, now, all we have left are a few ancient hieroglyphs –
We don’t know what they say, except that:

****

She was beautiful.
He was a kind.

****

Two of the older faiths.

WHO’S ETERNAL?

Here’s the question:

Can we be like Jesus –
I mean really like Jesus?

Or will he, instead, need to be eternally
Praying and paying
For us?

In other words,
Is it possible for each of us to communicate directly with God,
Or will we need to continue reciting denominational prayers
And forwarding them on to Jesus
For some later delivery?

Should we really be anxious about experiencing God individually –
Since, if God is Love, shouldn’t we feel free to run right to God –
Knowing God’s there, waiting for us?

Theology, steeples, sermons, and hymns –
All, in their varied ways, repeat: “Jesus is Lord” –

But that isn’t what Jesus prayed for –
Instead, he wanted each of us to become our own miracle.

He taught:

In this life – it’s you – and only you – who are eternal!

SUPERMAN

If there is no God
There are no longer any boundaries either –
Which is why, recently, the world’s been filling up with supermen
Who flourish best in anti-reality.

The problem with being strong in this way, however,
Is that supermen are able to withstand enormous amounts of self-destruction
Without having to admit there’s a problem.

Eventually, of course, even supermen
Come to a “tragic end” –
Fading like a comic strip left out in the sun.

But this won’t stop newer, more contemporary supermen from still going strong –
Making up reality as they go.

Jesus warned against this kind of behavior –
Always stressing humility.

That’s why they’ve had to remake the Christian religion
From top to bottom –
So that the red capes can continue streaming –

Superman, superman, despite all your superpowers,
You aren’t really real
Are you?

COURAGE IN THE FLOW

We earn the title of “human being” when we’re able to live out values
Higher than our everyday concerns –

Some examples are:
Love, truth, justice, beauty,
And “Good” – an alternative word for “God.”

Before enlightment, if and when that ever happens,
Each choice we make will be determined by our earlier unconscious choices –
Made without self-reflective thinking –

But to live “in the moment” – like God does –
We need the same inner freedom that God exhibits.

In order to accomplish that, however – we’ll need to shake off our elaborate egos
And ersatz societal roles –
And become free enough to resurrect our original true self.

It’s not sexuality that our predecessors, Adam and Eve, wanted to cover up –
It was their “self-made” artificial reality –
Which can only be changed by gaining the ability to see the world through God’s eyes.

Christianity, in order to justify itself, has promoted a misleading standard for all humanity –
“Perfection” –
But, after all, even God isn’t perfect in a mathematical or abstract sense –
Because God is alive

Like nature – just on a higher level.

So, to condemn ourselves as sinful because we haven’t achieved “perfection”
Is irrational
Because we aren’t –
And never will be.

One day, however, we might decide to be “born again” – like Jesus recommended –
And, as a consequence, be able to experience full reality –

The same as God –

After which, hopefully, we’ll start making intelligent-loving decisions,
Discovering all it took was

Courage in the flow –

That’s all –

Just a little courage
In the flow.
